Is Occupy Wall Street Wrong?

The recent Occupy Wall Street movement raises an issue with runaway capitalism and the widening gay between the rich and the poor in america. This movement has been infectious and is truly resounding with a growing segment of the population around the United States and the world.

However, not all people that believe in this movement are willing to set up tents and risk being arrested. The world economy is clearly in trouble and the people that support Occupy Wall Street are looking for an answer.

This desire to improve the world is a good thing. Hope is good. Working with your fellow human being is definitely a good thing, but are these protesters focusing their energy in the right place?

Some would say no. When you ask even more liberal segments of the society about this movement many times this will conjure up a negative reaction. While the movement has raised issues of economic inequality, they have also ran the risk of sounding like they support socialism and spreading the wealth.

They typically have a blow horn and will have an individual speaker talk about their economic woes and then over a loud speaker the audience will repeat their speech in a sort of chant form. This has been effective when the person speaking has a compelling argument, but all too often they sound like a bunch of cry babies.

One gentleman in his mid 20s got on the blow horn and said: "My name is ______, I just got laid off from my job. I had to move back in with my parents." as the crowd faithfully repeated his words. I'm sorry, but being a liberally leaning political mind myself, I find it hard to feel bad for someone like that. Oh, you had to move back in with your parents. Boo hoo! At least you're not homeless!

The problem these days is the extreme left and right side of our US political theater gets far too much publicity when the common sense center is ignored. Yes, financial inequality is very real in our society. However, if you are of able mind and are capable, you don't have to accept your fate as being laid off. This is America after all, and if you want to achieve something better, you can create your own opportunities!

Don't get me wrong, Occupy Wall Street has some valid arguments, and they may represent the 99%, but they are not 99% correct.

How to Make Money Online: Create Your Personal Brand

Whether you are a freelancer, blogger, webmaster, web merchant, mechanical turker, or some other aspiring web worker, you must demonstrate your value to the internet and the people who use it. It's all about eyeballs and getting users to view your content or use your products or services. To accomplish this, you must create your niche, or in other words, your own personal brand that is unique to you and offers something to users that others don't. Doing this is a complex undertaking.

Setting yourself apart is crucial for creating a unique and desirable brand. Doing this involves much more than just creating your logo or a flashy website. It's about carving out your niche and making it obvious why your approach is different and more beneficial than the next guy, or gal. It's important to remember that you cannot just build it and they will come. You must build something better for people to leave what they are currently using to use your website.

On that note, if what you're doing online doesn't create net benefits to your target user, they simply won't come back and will not use your service and you won't be very successful. I know what I'm saying here is a bit vague so let me get more specific.

To start building your personal brand you want to research your direct competition extensively. First, determine how much competition there is. Is your niche already too saturated? Are there opportunities to offer something different, or better than your competion? Determine what needs similar content or sites are serving. Are they doing it well? Are they under serving the community and if so, how? Find the under served areas of your niche and serve them!

If you're a freelancer this means offering services not offered by your competition or better customer service. If you're a blogger this means exploiting the weak areas of information in your chosen topic and creating a brand. For instance, if you're writing about cats, how is your topic different and honestly ask yourself or an impartial third party if you or they would visit your website and more importantly, come back again and again? If you say no, stop. Rethink, reorganize, redo what you were doing. This retooling of your approach to find what draws visitors back is necessary because repeat users are the key to a successful web business. If you need an example of a company that does this well look no further than Facebook.

Above all, be honest with yourself, don't let your pride get in the way! Believe me, I've done this far too many times and it never works out. If what you're doing isn't working, change, because the key to creating your personal brand is having the humility to admit when you're wrong and change when you need to.

Best of luck to all of you and here's hoping your future online income is great and your difficulties are small.

Thanks for reading!

~Justin

The New Economy Problem: Deficit of Innovation

America was conceived, constructed, and built on the shoulders of great innovators. Who, or more importantly, will there be any more great American innovators like Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, or even the great apple guru Steve Jobs whose life was recently cut too short due to cancer? What we have is a new economic problem which is a deficit of innovation and new thinking.

Some might call Steve Jobs one of the last great American innovators. Besides a few newcomers to the game like Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg who is going to rise up from Generation Y to build the new America?

I’m not saying we don’t have innovators, on the contrary. It’s just that old baby boomers are winding down their careers while new Generation Y workers (born from 1976-2001) are frustrated that their having trouble getting jobs like their parents did more easily. Many of this new generation have been told that as long as they do their due diligence and get a college degree they will have a cushy high paid career waiting for them.

Movements like the Occupy Wall Street protests currently raising new issues about elitism among the richest bank CEO’s and they special treatment they received with government bailouts when the rest of America’s citizens suffered. Some like Herman Cain have written them off as a spoiled group of privileged college kids and hipsters while others like celebrities have supported their cause.

Whichever side of the political argument you are, the truth is somewhere in between. The economy is in a deep recession like this generation has never seen. There’s no doubt about it. However, there is a paper trail we can review for this point in history to find out how we got here.

It’s true that Americans as a whole are depressed economically and are barraged with negative economic news daily. This has really hurt the psyche of the great American innovator in all of us. I do believe if given the proper circumstances and support, many more young people could rise up and create the new economy. Is today’s young generation up for this challenge? Some would say no.

While Generation Y, a force of 70 million, grows up and enters in the workplace, and advances, some would say there are not as driven to create as their parents. This young generation is information and technology savvy. They want to work but don’t want it to be their life. They also are the most college educated generation of all time however this isn’t translating into jobs especially recently.

This lack of a strong work ethic could hurt future American innovation. Today’s young people are very intelligent but put more resources into social media and popularity than ever before. Much of this is due to nurture. Today’s young generation has been raised in a much more image conscious society than ever before. This is the age of smart phones, the mindless internet video of the day, and over stimulating young minds with sex.

This has been destructive to the new workforce and I believe we are already seeing the effects. One issue may be the population as birth rates have been down dramatically in the last 20-30 years depending on the source you look at. However, I believe the actual problem is not related to numbers but instead to the volume of entrepreneurs. Before the industrial age there wasn’t the infrastructure we now have. Americans had to create a lot of the ideas they had.

Nowadays, much of the infrastructure already exists and our quality of life is significantly better. The future of our innovation will involve rethinking and rebuilding our infrastructure, however, the new innovative economy will largely involve information. This is the information age and the next great innovators are creating new ways to deal with information.

This is commonly seen on the internet, but it needs to expand to all other industries. Online media has already infiltrated nearly every facet of businesses, however for the new generation to truly innovate they need to take it to the next level. The next great innovations will involve advancements in the way we think, our corporations think, and how we internationally think.

Facebook is a great example of this. Information Technology that harnesses information and allows for new ways to interact effectively will be one of the largest sectors of growth. The next social media innovation, if it’s even called that will make even Facebook seen as a thing of the past.

There’s no questioning that America has lost its way. America’s new generation as a whole can tend to be too lazy, vain, too over-sexed, and perhaps are focusing too much energy in the wrong areas of their life that are not conducive to creation. I’m confident there will be many more great thinkers, but the new deficit of innovation is a truly historic economic problem. The real problem however, is how to solve it?
